JOE BLITZ INDUCTED INTO ABF HALL OF FAME

Long time Victorian member Joe Blitz was recently inducted into the ABF Hall of Fame. Joe first became involved in ballooning in Holland in the late 1940's. He was actively involved in the Netherlands Balloon Club which flew gas balloons in Holland and surrounding countries. On emigrating to Australia ballooning became a thing of the past for Joe, until the early 1970's when he saw a new balloon packed on a shipping pallet in storage, by chance. Making enquiries he found that there were a small number of hot air balloonists starting sport ballooning in Victoria. His passion reborn Joe tagged along until he was given a ride at Horsham airfield. That was enough to convince him to by "Ulinga".

Joe has introduced and trained numerous other balloonists. Most of then still active today, such was his skill at imparting his passion to others. Joe is one of the few pilots who attended every Barossa Balloon meet and in the process has amassed a horde of friends in ballooning in every state of Australia.

BALLOON EVENTS. ORG!!!

Dear Balloonists

I have found it very difficult to find out where to go and see hot air balloons, so I have designed a free web resource www.balloonevents.org listing worldwide hot air balloon events, from club grass root events, to the big festivals. There is also a proposed section for organisers big and small to list requests for balloons to come to their event. If you have a club or regional event you would like listed, please feel free to email me the details for inclusion.

It would be great if you could add a link on your website (or pass this email about) to pass the word about where to go and see balloons. If you feel you have any further information which would be helpful to the website from a pilot or spectator point of view, please feel free to suggest it.

Thanks
Chris

PART 149 - RECREATIONAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION ORGANISATIONS
Dateline 30.07.07
At long last CASA has released their 'Notice of Proposed Rule Making' NPRM0704OS which covers the self regulation of ballooning under Part 149.
This should be read in conjunction with the NPRM0603OS for Part 103 which covers Sport and Recreational Aviation Operations. When these are introduced and made into law the ramifications for sport (private) ballooning in Australia are huge. It is recommended that all ABF members obtain a copy of this NPRM and read it carefully.

These 2 NPRM's cover the self administration of ballooning and revisions in the regulations covering the operation of ballooning.

If you would like further information or wish to discuss it further within the ABF I suggest you contact our Vice President, Danny Galbraith at Dannygalbraith1@optusnet.com.au .Danny, as our delegate to ASAC (Australian Sport Aviation Confederation), has been responsible for presenting the ABF's views to that body and through them to CASA.

If you have any comment to make on the NPRM you are strongly encouraged to do so, either direct to CASA, through the ABF or both. Please feel free to discuss this with any of the ABF Executive or your Regional representative

The NPRM for 149 may be found at <http://www.casa.gov.au/newrules/parts/149/NPRM0704OS.asp>

The NPRM for Part 103 may be found at <http://rrp.casa.gov.au/ors_nprm0603os.asp>

Please note that the closing date for comment on both of these NPRM's is 24th September 2007 so, please, DO IT NOW!

WE HAVE A CHAMPION!
Dateline 29.07.07
Congratulations to Paul Gibbs, Sean Kavanagh and Ed Michell on their 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the 2007 Australian National Hot Air Balloon Championships. It is heartening to see that the results of the Championship confirm the ability of our top pilots. Consistency was the key. Danny Galbraith once calculated that you had to average 8th place to win a World Championship.  Well if you do the same exercise we have done, you will find Paul Gibbs averaged 6th to win the 2007 Australian Nationals. I would say that this is an indication of the rising level of competition flying skills in this country.

It is also pleasing to see the depth of competition talent displayed at the Nationals, with previous Champions such as Phil Kavanagh (1990) and Tim Steiner (2000) placing well in the field. It was also good to see so many Commercial Pilots taking a busman's holiday and competing so well - proof that skill is all the better for regular practice.

Even your humble Editor managed a couple of seconds - pity about a few other low scores! Like others, I will be back next time, planning to learn from my mistakes and capitalising on the training and preparation that gave me a 'non-fault' result on the rules, if not in the flying.

This victory makes Paul Gibbs our first triple National Champion (1996, 1998 & 2007). Congratulations to Paul and all the other participating pilots, be they old hands or new to competition, for a safe Championship. I think they will all agree, no matter where they finished, competition flying is a great learning exercise for polishing flying and flight planning skills, not to mention reading skills!

Particular thanks and congratulations must go to the small organising committee, ABF Officers and Director Les Purfield from the U.K. - not only for "getting the job done" so well, but for organising a friendly, well run competition and for bringing many new faces into ballooning, with the young Venturer Scouts and Benalla locals who acted as Observers under the instruction of Bill Brown and Scobie Peart.  It was also great to see familiar faces amongst the Observers from previous Nationals passing on their skills. We appreciated the Benalla locals and farmers who welcomed us with wonderful hospitality and all in all, it's a great place to fly, with beautiful scenery and good flying conditions.

PASSING OF THE 'FATHER' OF MODERN HOT AIR BALLOONING
Dateline 30th May 2007

Dear Friends,

I have the sad duty to announce that Ed Yost, the father of modern hot air ballooning, died last Sunday at his home in Taos, New Mexico, aged 87.

Ed was a living monument and he was the first living inductee into the FAI Ballooning Commission Hall of Fame in 1995. (http://www.webwire.com/ViewPressRel.asp?aId=37531) He will continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make in ballooning, and we will remember Ed with eternal gratitude.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes to Ed's family and his friends.

Ed Yost is survived by his two sons Greg and Dale Yost, and his granddaughter Nicole. No memorial service is planned and Ed's family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the National Balloon Museum in Indianola, Iowa.

"SKY ORCHESTRA" OPENS FESTIVAL OF SYDNEY
Dateline 07.01.07
I
n a spectacular start to the New Year, balloonists from around Australia became an airborne orchestra to open the 2007 Festival of Sydney at Parramatta Park yesterday. Their performance was well received by an appreciative public as the pre-recorded synchronized electronic sound artwork drifted gently down from the cluster of balloons as they drifted slowly south from Parramatta park to landings in South Granville.

Seven of the balloons carried speakers with each balloon playing a different element of a special musical score, an experimental artwork by sound artist Luke Jerram and composer Dan Jones, which merges performance and music to create an audio visual installation both in the air and within the mind.

Balloons from Canberra, Victoria and Western Australia joined 4 local balloons in the precision flying required to keep the orchestra together and provide an essential component of the performance.

Richard Gillespie and the Balloon Aloft Camden passenger balloon provided local knowledge and media rides on the first morning and the flight received excellent coverage on all local television stations. Everyone who participated enjoyed the morning. Steve and Di Ireland are again to be congratulated on their excellent organisation.

"A gorgeous sight on the second day as eight balloons (and music) kissed their way slowly east along Parramatta Park with the crowd following on foot like the pied piper!" reports Sue Browne.

The story continues.....

If anyone has any great photos could they send them to me via email or put a CD in the post to 5 Langton Park, Southville, Bristol BS3 1EG. UK. In particular I'm looking for images of the public and their reaction. Any other stunning shots would be great too. I'll only use them for non commercial purposes, to promote Sky Orchestra and when used you'll of course be credited.

News is Sky Orchestra has been invited to the Brisbane river festival to perform and to Korea. Its down to everyone's hard work that these opportunities have come about.

SAD NEWS FROM JAPAN - WORLD BALLOONING HAS LOST ONE OF ITS GREATEST ADVOCATES
Dateline 09.11.06

Dear Friends,

I have the very sad duty to inform you that our dear friend Masashi Kakuda passed away this afternoon. Masashi had suffered a severe myocardial incident on Monday and has been in intensive care at Saga University Hospital since then.

This terrible loss, at a time when Masashi put all his energy and competence at our service to organize a successful World Championship in his home country, leaves us all shattered and inconsolable. For many years Masashi has been a personal friend and a friend of the CIA and the global ballooning community, and he earned the world's respect for his active involvement in ballooning. Throughout the years, he was a most respected voice of reason and moderation that helped the CIA to stay on track. On behalf of the all the world’s balloonists, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Masashi’s family and to his many friends. I wish you hope in the midst of sorrow, comfort in the midst of pain.

Now that Masashi has been “promoted” to eternal bliss, he will continue to bloom in our hearts and I will find comfort and strength in my memories where he will never fade away. The World Championship will go on and happen as Masashi planned, and I am convinced that we have his full support and blessing. This will be Masashi’s World Championship.

With heartfelt sympathy,
JC Weber, President
FAI Ballooning Commission

Congratulations to Sean Kavanagh on his fourth place in this year's Motegi leg of the Honda Grand Prix and Pre-Worlds. World No.3, Paul Gibbs came 19th. Both pilots improved their positions from last year and have had more valuable experience in the venue for the 2006 World Championship.

The pace was gruelling with 32 tasks flown on 9 flights in 41/2 days of competition. Steve Ireland reports some flights were quintuple and sextuple tasks! Amongst the 44 competitors were several former World Champions and top competition pilots from the USA, UK, Europe and Japan. Current World Champion Markus Pieper finished 13th.

The placegetters were: -
1- DONNER, Nick        USA
2- FUJITA, Masashiko Japan
3- SCHNEIDER, Uwe   Germany

Its not just Australian pilots who are prominent at the Honda Grand Prix. Also in attendance, officiating, were Steve Ireland, Gary Lacy and Bill Dolence.

NEW AIRSPACE PROCEDURES
ABF Operations Team -
Dateline 24.11.05
All ABF pilots and student pilots are reminded that from today (Thursday 24 November) new airspace and radio procedures apply within 10NM of any aerodrome. You should be aware of and follow the information outlined in the package 'Operations at Non-Towered Aerodromes' you received from DOTARS, and the notes on this package in the ABF Pilots Circular issue 9 which was included with the latest Aeronotes. (Now also available on this website, see the DOCUMENTS page. Ed.)
The main changes are - MBZ's cease to exist, CTAF procedures apply at all non-towered aerodromes, CTAF no longer has fixed boundaries but slightly different radio procedures apply within 10NM (18.5 km) of any non-towered aerodrome. Radio frequencies generally will not change. Please read the documents carefully, and be sure you understand them.
From 24 November you should not fly until you:
- have a current air navigation chart for your intended flying area and locate any aerodromes on it.
- know and follow the new procedures when within 10NM of an aerodrome.
- in particular, carry and use VHF air-band radio where required (you must have a CASA radio licence or an ABF radio operator certificate to use it)

Use the new procedures from day 1, but also be alert for other aircraft which may NOT remember to use them.

Also, be aware that aircraft making straight-in approaches to land at an aerodrome are now supposed to advise this on radio using the words 'JOIN FINAL' instead of 'MAKE STRAIGHT IN APPROACH'. Faster aircraft may make their first radio call from as much as 30NM away as they approach.

If you have any questions please email me on sfisher@picknowl.com.au or phone 0415 454 004 anytime.

Safe flying!
Simon Fisher - ABF Training Officer

Winner of the 2005 Australian Long Jump Les Springett made a flight of 69km in slow conditions on the last Saturday in August. Congratulations also to Ian Brownlie of Victoria for his second place for a flight of 26km on the same morning. This year's other entrant Chris Shorten was planning to fly the same morning but was exhausted after a commercial flight and did not fly but is looking forward to next year's Jump. There was great interest from pilots around the country and many wanted more notice and a longer time span to make an attempt. Awards were presented at the Montgolfier Dinners in New South Wales and Victoria.
The event created great camaraderie amongst pilots and we expect many more entries next year.

MAJOR UPGRADE TO WEBSITE DOCUMENT ACCESS

At the suggestion of ABF Administrator Dale Allen, I have created a new link page called DOCUMENTS which you will find on the Contents side bar.  This contains all documents stored on the ABF website - an easy to access area for members and the general public.

In addition, Dale and I have formulated a plan to further increase access to key documents, such as the new Airworthiness Directives (Balloons) AD-BALs, which will progressively be added to the DOCUMENTS access page.  For those of you who may not be aware, the website already carries printable copies of the New Member Application Form, Membership Renewal, Student Certificate and Private Pilot Application Forms, the ABF Constitution and all Pilot Circulars.  So if you need any of these documents, try the website!

FIRST FLIGHT FOR NEW KAVANAGH G-450

Kavanagh balloons largest yet the G-450 made its maiden test flight at Canowindra last month. Photos of the new G-450 from its maiden flight in Cairns courtesy of Andrew Steele of Hot Air in Cairns.

The G-450 allows 25 passengers to be carried on a single flight.

On a slightly smaller scale individual balloonists are achieving their personal goals, some like Adam Barrow are building and flying their own balloons. Editor.

ADAM BARROW MAKES SOLO RETRIEVE FLIGHT

I finally realised one of my dreams on the weekend when I made a balloon flight completely on my own.  I have always wanted to be able to inflate fly and retrieve a balloon on my own so it makes it possible to go flying whenever and wherever you want without the need to organise a tribe of crew to help out.

On Sunday I strapped on the trusty pushy to the rubbish bin and off we went.  There was no-one else around, no crew, no other balloons, no spectators.  Just me, the bike and the balloon, quite surreal in a lot of ways.

Have attached some pics that I will also get up on the website at some stage.  Cheers Adam Barrow.

Adam's website is now at http://www.balloonsvictoria.com/balloonbuilding

THE WORLD'S

Two weeks to go!!!

Dateline 19th June

Everything is on track for 27 June to 3 July 2004 when we'll be showcasing  the very, very best of Australian ballooning to the world's ballooning

fraternity at the 16th World Hot Air Ballooning Championships.

Last minute headlines read:

 Slight sponsorship hiccup

As you've probably heard, the Nudie factory was recently destroyed by fire. (by the way for those who don't know Nudie is a brand of natural fruit juice drink and not at all pornographic. Editor). Naturally they are more concerned with rebuilding their business and getting product back into the marketplace so the event budget has been reworked for lesser dollars in sponsorship.  Outstanding Nudie sponsorships payments have been scheduled to continue after the event.

Organisation

Organisation personnel chart finalised and Kerry Frankel has been officially

appointed as the Event Director.

ABF/State Club tent

Great opportunity for membership drive!

There will be an ABF/State Club tent smack in the middle of the public area

selling ABF items, such as the new 18-month ballooning calendars and the

Worlds issue of Aeronotes.  ABF membership information will also be

available.

It's been suggested that State Clubs would also be able to sell regional club merchandise and, more importantly, recruit new club members.  The proposed management of the tent on a State Club basis is :

Sunday      27 June     BAV

Monday      28 June    NSW/ACT

Tuesday     29 June    SABAC

Wednesday 30 June    BAV

Thursday    01 July     NSW/ACT

Friday        02 July     SA

Saturday    03 July     BAV

State clubs are able to distribute their own club material and sell their

own merchandise from the ABF tent so long as it does not conflict with

vendor conditions (i.e. as long as it doesn't have the Worlds logo).

The proposal is that each region should fill a roster for their respective days (6.30 am to 5.00 pm with a possible break in the middle of the day).

Dale Allen is to be advised of a contact person in each region who can be

contacted directly by members (or non members wanting to be involved) happy to volunteer their services for an hour or two.

Dale has also emailed all ABF members asking for their support.  WA and Qld

with very limited attendees at the worlds have not been allocated days but

it's hoped that members from those States will be able to assist at a session with another State club.

Latest update on volunteers
(As given by Suze McKenzie at last week's ABF teleconference)

Approximately 350 volunteers are in place (not counting observers or 350

volunteer performers).  There are additions and deletions still happening as

people's circumstances change.

Most volunteers will have received their formal invitation, acceptance,

agreement, code of conduct, code of practice and general information sheet

including an event schedule.  There were some difficulties with opening

emails and many invitations were resent by snail mail.

A small number of mainly local volunteers have yet to receive theirs,

though most are already in contact with their team leader. Most team leaders have a staff list and contact details.

Yet to be circulated are the team lists for scoring/tracking, lost children and disability assistance, ticket sales LF and some smaller teams with only 2-3 members.

Team meetings for groups mainly staffed by locals have commenced (welcome, job descriptions, site plans, details about daily schedule, FAQ, services for volunteers)

Safety induction material is being formulated by Simon Fisher (Including evacuation procedures, marshals, etc)

Availability/uniform forms have been circulated to all email users.  Phone

contact will be made with others.

The Balloon Office is staffed by a roster of volunteers Mon - Sat 10.00am - 4.00pm and market Sundays

The final marker-making working bee will take place next Sunday am

A working bee on the launch field site will take place soon. (Probably

this weekend too).

Last minute requests for assistance or equipment:

Refuelling hoses

A last minute change to refuelling procedures has prompted an urgent call

for the loan of refuelling hoses.  If possible, these are required to be in

Mildura from 19 June onwards and arrangements are in place to get them up

there for use during the week prior to the championships when many overseas pilots will be familiarising themselves with Australian flying conditions.

Ian Robertson is lending his refuelling hose and thanks to Peter Dutneall, Ron Watson, Tony Parkes, Chris Shorten and Adam Barrow who've already responded to this request. (A number of NSW&ACT Members including Graham Kerr, Kay Turnbull and Les Springett also lent connectors).

Drivers for vehicles

Drivers are still wanted to ferry hire vehicles up to Mildura.   These are

mainly cars that will be used by officials during the event.  At the moment

it looks as though we will need 18 vehicles driven up so we need a few more

volunteers. If you want more room to s‹t‹r‹e‹t‹c‹h out in and/or have your

own choice of radio station or tape/CD during a long drive rather than the

driver's music selection, just contact Dale to volunteer as a hire car

driver to Mildura.  Petrol expenses will be reimbursed.

Are there any interstate ABF members coming into Melbourne before the Worlds who could also volunteer to drive a vehicle to Mildura?  Again, please

contact the National Administrator with your offer.

Meet and greet teams.

Some members have already arranged to meet overseas ballooning friends as

they fly into Tullamarine, which is great. (The same arrangements have been made in Sydney by BCNSW&ACT)

The organising committee is trying to ensure that all competitors and

officials are personally greeted when they arrive into Melbourne and then

guided to their hire car desks, hotels, etc.  We'd still like a few more "meet and greet people" at Tullamarine - times tentatively are between 4am

and 11am and between 4pm and 10pm for the dates 18-22 June. (Our thanks to Kay Turnbull and Paul Gianniotis who assisted Les Springett and Wendy Friezer with the Sydney service.)

International teams and officials have been told if they give flightdetails, they will be met but we cannot meet those who do not give details.

It is expected that most people will be arriving within a short time frame on a small number of flights.

Finally, good luck, good weather and winning places to Sean, Paul and Ed.

It's been 21 years since an Aussie won the Worlds and I really believe one

of these three could win the Worlds.

AUSTRALIAN DISTANCE AND DURATION RECORD ATTEMPT

Chris Shorten, chief pilot of Balloon Sunrise, will attempt to break the

Australian records for distance and duration (across all classes of

balloons) during the week before the Worlds. He only has a short window of

opportunity for this attempt so fingers) crossed that the weather will be

suitable for lift off in Melbourne and a northerly landing in NSW.

ABF Committee Meetings

Being held more often than usual in the lead up to the Worlds and the next

meeting is Thursday 17 June.    Please advise if there are any items (ABF,

general flying, Worlds, etc.) that you would like me to cover as your

Vic/Tas representative.  The annual face-to-face committee meeting is

scheduled for Saturday 31 July.

NEW SOUTH WALES / ACT CLUB ROLLS OUT WELCOME WAGON FOR INTERNATIONAL TEAMS
20.07.04
As part of the 2004 Worlds BCNSW&ACT members to showed visiting balloonists Sydney, Canberra and our regular flying areas, such as Canowindra ,  on the way  to and from the World Championship. Unfortunately weather conditions did not permit balloon flights in each location. However the Sydney and Canberra welcoming dinners were well attended.

The "meet and greet" service for teams  arriving  at Kingsford Smith Airport helping with luggage and equipment  collection  and  taking teams to their hotels was a great success and was greatly appreciated by visiting teams.

TALES OF THE WORLDS
One of the 'epic journeys' of the World Championships was the 'rescue' of the Kazakhstan entry. When it was found that the Registration and Airworthiness documentation for their balloon envelope (brought into Australia as luggage) was not in accordance with CASA's strict requirements Chris Hanson kindly offered to lend his envelope to go with his bottom end already loaned to Kazakhstan. The only trouble was the envelope was 1000km away in Sydney! So it was that Ken Lucas and Mal Smith made an epic 11hr trip to Narrandera, (half way to Sydney) and back so Dimitry Kalachev would have a balloon to fly in the worlds. Nor was this the only such story.
At about the same time one of the other entrants was likewise being rescued with the loan of an envelope from Melbourne in an equally dramatic and arduous drive by its owner.

This was one of a number of such stories of international goodwill and co-operation, which should not go unmentioned in the wash up of the world championships.

Les Springett, President BCNSW&ACT.

NEW BALLOON FOR BUDDING HOMEBUILDER ADAM BARROW
Dateline 18.05.04

Adam Barrow has completed his most recent balloon project over the weekend.  The new balloon, called WOFYL is a one person balloon, 35,000 cu ft in size, was test inflated on Saturday 15th in Mansfield, Victoria.  The project has taken Adam 110 hours and cost just under $3000 to complete. Adam has updated his website for the project with some new pictures of the inflation day. The pictures can be found at www.balloonsvictoria.com/balloonbuilding
The balloon has had its C of A inspection and has passed so if the weather is good Adam hopes to be out flying it at the next available opportunity.  For those of you who didn't realise it.... yes that is a wheelie bin for the basket. (This follows in the 'grand tradition' set by internationally renowned balloon builder Brian Boland. Its nice to see the great traditions kept alive. I hope it is well attached Adam!)

Explorer 'breaks altitude record'
The balloon set off from Colorado in its record-breaking attempt
The explorer David Hempleman-Adams says he believes he has broken the world altitude record for a balloon with an open wicker basket.

Mr Hempleman-Adams reached his target height of 37,000 feet one hour 15 minutes after take-off from Colorado.

The previous record of 35,626ft was set by Per Axel Lindstrand in 1996.

Speaking from Denver, the explorer said he thought he had scooped a total of eight world records and reached an unconfirmed height of 42 or 43,000ft.

Flight director Tim Cole said: "It definitely looks like he has done it but we won't have official confirmation until tonight."

In a crackly radio transmission from the balloon, Mr Hempleman-Adams told the team he believed he had broken the world altitude record for a Roziere balloon.

On the ground in Denver in his first interview after landing, the 47-year-old told the BBC of his success.

"We were trying for 36,000ft but we got the absolute record as well - we got up to something like 42 or 43,300 but we've got to confirm that.

Balloon graphic
The ascent is the latest in the explorer's string of challenges

"I was just above the cloud and it was spectacular but it was about minus 80 so I was just concentrating on keeping everything going and breathing.

"I was on 'demand oxygen' and it was just too much to look at the scenery.

"Because it was so cold we had a few problems and one or two bits of the oxygen kit froze but that's happened before.

"Because of that we took a triple system - and I'm glad we did.

"The landing was one of my better ones - I didn't take out too many cows here so it worked out OK.

"But it was quite scary and just nice to get landed."

The Mears Altitude Challenge balloon - named after the sponsors of the bid - is 140ft high from basket to envelope top.

It is the same balloon Mr Hempleman-Adams used to complete the first single-handed passage across the Atlantic in September 2003.

The father-of-three from Box said he had chosen to use the open wicker basket over an enclosed capsule as it was the "traditional" way of ballooning.

He wore an oxygen mask to cope with the high altitude, while the burners of the Roziere-type balloon were specially adapted to deal with the sub-zero temperatures.

SO CLOSE BUT SO FAR
Several of the contestants in the KEY GRAB demonstration event at this year's National Championships had near brushes with fame, but the Hutchison Motors car was safe for another year. Particularly notable were the efforts of event organisers Kerry Frankel and Deidre Blackmore who passed just beyond arms reach to one side and Les Springett and Liz Marrack in Sol Aria which lined up beautifully on the key only climb over the top instead of sinking.
Next time VENT!
Pilot Les Springett finds looking down on a key is not exactly the same as grabbing it!

GPS - IS IT THE WAY OF THE FUTURE?

Mt. Nangar Flight GPS Tracking Data Displayed as 3D map overlay.

After the successful application of GPS Data Loggers at the last World Championship and the recent National Championship there has been a good deal of interest in the application of GPS to balloon competitions in Australia.

The Balloon Club of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory has conducted a trial event exploiting the potential of GPS scoring to set interesting and unusual objectives. In this case the target was a point high above an otherwise inaccessible mountain top.

How long will it be before we see GPS used in serious National and International Competition? It is only a matter of time many believe and Australians are helping to lead  the way with prominent Australian competition officials co-operating with their overseas counterparts to produce a fully functional GPS based competition scoring system.
