The Great Australian Balloon Long Jump
Based on the British and American Long Jump events, The Great Australian
Balloon Long Jump is an annual nationwide ballooning competition. Balloonists
from all over Australia compete to see who can fly the furthest using only
150 litres of propane. Flights take place anywhere in Australia, allowing
each competitor to choose their own time and place to fly.
To allow for extended flights, the competition this year is running from
the beginning of July until the end of September, during the Australian
Winter. Flights of 4-5 hours covering over 100 km are possible.
With weather either too fast and wet or too slow Long Jumps have been few
and short. This is the longest flight reported so far, just 23km, with
contestants still hoping to fly over 100km before the end of the event.
