Membership:
Membership is divided into the following categories:

  • Associate
  • Normal
  • Certificate

Associate and Normal memberships are open to anyone. Certificate memberships are available only to people who possess Student, Pilot, Instructor and/or Examiner certificates. 

Apart from temporary membership which is normally restricted to visitors to Australia, membership lasts for 12 months and is renewable on or before 31 December each year.

Payment for membership may be made by cheque or credit card. Please do not send cash.

If you want to ask any questions about joining the ABF, contact the Administrator.

Applications for membership which are made after 30 April will attract a pro rata discount of 10% per month for each month of the calendar year that has passed.

Pilot Certificates:
The ABF is responsible for licensing private balloon pilot students, pilots, instructors and examiners on behalf of the Australian Federal Government's Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

Within the ABF, all ABF licences are referred to as certificates. Download an application for certificate/upgrade 100kb pdf

Currency of ABF certificates continues only if:

  • ABF membership is maintained, and all specific operational requirements are met.

Pilot Training:
To commence training to become a balloon pilot you need to be an ABF member and hold a Student Pilot Certificate. To become a balloon pilot you must undergo a total of 15 hours of training with an ABF appointed Instructor and pass the five exams on the following subjects

  • Code of Conduct
  • Aerostatics
  • Rules and Procedures
  • Meteorology
  • Navigation
